Our History
Mangawhai is a place of history and heart, from the old waterfront pub and colonial buildings to the proliferation of holiday homes and baches.
Mangawhai’s stunning harbour has always played an important part in our rich and varied history, beginning with the Maori settlements then to the early English settlers with their shipbuilding, gumdigging, Kauri milling, and later farming.
In the early and mid 19th century, Mangawhai harbour was one of the main access points for the Kaipara. Ngati whatua used to drag waka from Kaiwaka to Mangawhai. A Nga puhi war party landed in Mangawhai in February 1825 and moved 12km inland to confront the Ngati whatua near Kaiwaka.
Today Mangawhai is a popular seaside holiday destination and also home to many artists and craftsmen lifestylers who contribute to the thriving chocolate making, avocado, wine and olive industries and families looking for a more relaxed lifestyle.

Our Environment
We are so pleased you have chosen to stay with us while exploring the Mangawhai area.
We at Mangawhai Heads Holiday Park have made an informed decision to do our bit to protect and care for our home town, some of which you will see in action, others you may not even notice such as buying locally, using sustainable paper products, replacing light bulbs with eco bulbs where possible. Closing amenities block in off season when usage is low to conserve power and water consumption.
We encourage recycling and provide recycling bins within in the park. These are big Molok bins that is predominantly under ground so the bins do not blow over in storms etc and put unnecessary waste into our beautiful estuary.
We invite you to join us in our endeavours where practicable by turning off lights/heater when not required. Turn off taps and report any leaks or dripping taps. Leave your vehicle and take the 10 mins walk along the beach and up the stairs to the shops and cafes.
By even making one of these small changes, we can make a difference.
Thank you so much for your support and we hope you have a great stay in our area.
